Designed by Neri & Hu, Tsingpu Yangzhou Retreat is a leading example of repurposing design. The site was once a complex of abandoned concrete buildings. Today, it’s one of the most interesting and beautiful hotels in all of China. Brick walls and exposed concrete still reign, but skylights, clever use of dark and pastel materials, and luxury fabrics add softness. An exhibition space, theatre, and restaurant occupy the former warehouse buildings, alongside 20 intimate rooms. Furthermore, from a distance, the hotel’s low roof renders it almost invisible amongst the surrounding landscape.

Alila Yangshuo Guilin

Beijing-based Vector Architects converted the former sugar mill into a luxury hotel. At the center of the complex is a sunken plaza and reflecting pool, around which the hotel’s building spread out. There’s an emphasis on incorporating old and new, with industrial elements evident throughout the design.
