Nestled on the Nicoya Peninsula, the region of Malpaís is made up of 3 resorts – Santa Teresa, Playa Carmen, and Malpaís. This remote rainforest-covered destination is an excellent choice for novice surfers. At Playa Carmen, the break keeps waves below 3 feet, making it a great place for beginners. If you’re more experienced, Santa Teresa offers high swells, point breaks and beach breaks. There are several surf shops offering lessons and board rentals if you don’t wish to bring your own. Salsa Brava
If you’re up for the challenge, Salsa Brava has some of the biggest waves in Costa Rica. Located on the Caribbean coast, close to the laid-back tourist town of Puerto Viejo, this is a destination suited for expert surfers. Salsa Brava is known for its large hollow waves and coral reef breaks, with rides consistently ranging between 50 to 150 meters. The waves drop quickly into a right-hand barrel, so you’ll need to be fast on your feet. It’s challenging, but if you manage to ride the tube, you can count yourself as one of the few to conquer it.

Playa Naranjo
